There was a discussion on the Biggles Forum recently about all the fics which have been posted there and if they were being stored in the most accessible way. They were sorted into complete and incomplete works when the new forum was built a few years ago, and apart from moving finished stories from Works in Progress to Finished Fics, nothing further was being done. The main issues were down to the large number of stories now posted so:

It was hard to know what any given story might be about when the only information was Title and Author.

It was hard to find particular stories

As many of the longer stories had been posted in sections over time, comments appeared all the way through them which broke up the reading experience.

It was decided to create an Index to all the completed fics, dividing the stories into World War 1, Inter-War, World War 2 and Special Air Police sections to make it easier to find tales of interest, and to list them all alphabetically under title, accompanied by author name, a one line synopsis and a link to the story. Many thanks to Foolscap who did much of the work. All the finished fics are now listed and most have a one line synopsis added. All the fics on the forum are gen so no warnings were needed.

The last issue was harder to sort as it came down to 'What is the Forum for' and the answer seemed to be for discussion rather than archiving so rather than post second, clean, copies of every story on the forum, archiving is currently being left to individual choice. I've decided to archive on AO3. There's not very much. I've already posted the two Halloween stories:

The Lykewake Dirge https://archiveofourown.org/works/42672519/chapters/107195244

Henry and his Big Black Dog https://archiveofourown.org/works/42467820

Both of these are set in World War 2, at Rawlham.

The only two left, apart from all my Challenge stories which I haven't decided whether to archive or not, are the first two Twelve Days of Christmas stories which I'll get up hopefully today and edit this post to include their links. I was intending posting over a longer timescale, but life, more specifically access to the computer the fics are on, is interfering.

An absolute Winter Wonderland of a drive home from my mother's this afternoon. It's a stunning drive anytime of the year as I'm travelling from Coastal Cumbria, around the north and east of the Lake District then to the West of the Yorkshire Dales down to the Ribble Valley, mostly off motorway. The entire journey was either snow: enough to cover all the fields and hills, or heavy frost riming all the hedges, trees and verges. There were rags of clouds hanging around the valleys of the mountains and the whole journey was exceptionally pretty. Only the confident drivers were out, and I'd driven for nearly two hours before I got stuck behind a tractor. This is exceptional.

Visiting Mum is always a mixed bag. She's very good for her age, but gets over-excited when my brother visits and then gets over-tired and spends her time telling us about our father, who, surprisingly enough, we knew all our lives and were physically present for most of the incidents she tells us of. Which she gets wrong. And then she goes onto what a difficult child I was (I wasn't) and how nice my brother was. I was given control of the log burner to keep me calm. This helped. I burned a lot of wood last night. I'm talented with fires.

Snow and fire has put me into a slightly better mood about my third house sale falling through. I shall spend the evening with friends and be adult again tomorrow. Thank goodness I haven't taken all the old paint cans to the tip yet.

After chasing me for the last few weeks to make sure I can complete my house sale and be out by 20th December, my buyers today, now the dates have been agreed, have pulled out. They are claiming that this is because the plans for a new coal mine proposed for a few miles away, have been passed by the government yesterday and they don't want to be anywhere near a coal mine . Given that this mine had been in planning since 2013, no one locally expects it to go ahead and it is several miles away in existing mines, I am not happy. I think they should have said something much earlier.

This is the third house sale to fall through in one year for me. The first prospective buyers had elderly parents who lived abroad who became ill. I am an hour's drive from the nearest motorway and two from the nearest airport so I can see that it my location would be a problem to anyone needing to travel much.

The second buyers were very keen to start a family. They talked themselves into needing everything to be perfect before they started. When they realised that one of them would have a much lower salary up here and costed all the jobs they wanted to do, they realised they couldn't afford to buy my house and have everything done before trying for a family.

Have I been unlucky or are people just so much more unrealistic these days?

Back to unpacking boxes as I was expecting to be out in just over a week.

This was my first exchange (I’m not used to having enough writers in my little fandom to contemplate an exchange with) and it was great fun! Thank you very much to the people who gifted me stories: they were all fabulous

A touching moment between Biggles and Algy in the immediate aftermath of Terai. It was sweet and tender and much appreciated.

No one writes Algy like Black Bentley and I’m very fond of her outrageous version of him. Another mini-classic.

This has everything I love. Dinosaurs! More dinosaurs! Algy playing with dinosaurs! Every dinosaur related thing which should occur in a story did occur. Life is good.

I wrote one story, which grew legs.

I had a blast writing the early stages of Biggles/EvS. It’s a fun ship which I’ll probably write more of, although my favourite and the one which is meant to be above all others is, of course, Biggles /Algy.

Thanks again for my gifts, everyone, and it's not long until the next exchange:

See you all there!

It's 1:30 in the morning and I have been crawling around my bedroom floor in search of the squeak. Ordinary people might think a settling floorboard the cause, but I know my cat. What is really sad is how quickly I managed to throw a towel over the vole and encourage it into the empty box I keep in my bedroom for the specific purpose of catching imported rodents. It only took a couple of minutes after entering the fray. This speaks of far too much practice. Vole relocated to the great outdoors, which it probably has mixed feelings about as it's freezing outside. Cat distracted with cat treats, hopefully for long enough for the vole to escape to safety. I expect I will find it has been recaught and lying dead in the hall tomorrow, though. Cat is persistent. Note to subconscious, check slippers and shoes before inserting feet for a couple of days.

Hello everyone! Well, hello Black Bentley whom I know to be out there and anyone else who finds me.

I made my account a while ago as I thought I needed it for a fic exchange and then did absolutely nothing with it, so apologies if I've been ignoring you in my ignorance. I've been looking at a few 'How to use Dreamwidth' articles but they all seem to presume that I'm familiar with LiveJournal or Tumblr which I'm not, so I'll apologise in advance for any breaches of netiquette whilst I'm working out what I'm doing. Whilst I'm on the subject of apologies, I'll apologise in advance for how long it will take me to reply or acknowledge posts at times. I have chronic fatigue and sometimes the brain fog interferes with my ability to function at a higher level than a somnambulant hedgehog and I have a dreadful habit of reading stuff intending to reply to it later then forgetting completely about it. I also lose track of time. You are all duly warned.

Dreadful confessions over, back to the 'Hello'.

I live in the North of England, on the coast in a rather eccentric village. I'm an hour away from the nearest motorway and two from the nearest big city (I can hear people from elsewhere in the world laughing their socks off at my definition of remote, but this is remote for most of Britain) which at times makes me feel like I'm living in the 1950s but I like it here. I'm in the middle of moving house and have been for the entire year. So far two purchasers have pulled out at the last minute and I have lost two houses I offered on so I've spent most of the year camping out as I've disposed of stuff ready for moves which didn't happen. Currently, my lovely buyers want to move in before Christmas but the flat I want to move to hasn't been converted yet. The public school in the village sold an entire terrace which had been used as boarding houses and staff accommodation to a local developer but it's Grade 2 listed and the Victorian Society is objecting to everything. It's taken them ten months to get planning permission to replace the single glazed windows with double glazing as the Victorian Society wanted the original windows, which are held together entirely with filler, kept. If I disappear suddenly, it will be because my possessions will be in a different place to myself whilst I await the completion of my new home.

I spend my days quite quietly on the whole: I read a lot - mainly old detective stories and urban fantasy. As I'm desperately trying to downsize, I'm reading on the Kindle Unlimited app and not buying books at all so I'm missing out on a few good series which aren't on Unlimited. I'll catch up with them when I've moved (I have much sympathy for the tramps who are Waiting for Godot). I'm not much of a TV watcher, but Strictly Come Dancing is a must. SAS Rogue Heroes was also unmissable, for entirely the wrong reasons probably, but who cares? I enjoyed Sandman and binge watched Lucifer recently, a guilty pleasure. I'm currently cross-stitching a picture of my daughter's new house for her; I do some scrapbooking and card making. I'm very involved with the Biggles forum. I'm part of a quiz team at the local pub - very amateur but great fun - and every now and again I get in touch with my real self and find a table to dance on.

Send links and advice, people. I look forward to getting to know you.
